Summer Sleeping Bags

Summer Sleeping Bags

The term ‘summer sleeping bag’ is a bit of a broad term. Because summer in Far North Queensland is very different from summers experienced in the Red Centre or even the highlands of Victoria.

Either way a summer bag is one that is rated in the plus-degree temperature range. Most summer sleeping bags around display the temperature range around +10°C on the packaging.  However, having said that, the +10°C rating could in fact be the sleeping bag’s lower performance limit where when the outside temperature falls much below +10°C the user may feel some cold or discomfort. And the optimal performance temperature is in fact +15°C.

It’s always important to read or ask for as much information as possible before purchasing sleeping bags if you are new to the game of camping or hiking.

How do I know if I need a Summer or Winter sleeping bag?

Here at Bundy Outdoors, we would recommend buying a sleeping bag that suits your needs for 90% of the time. Depending on what you are doing and how often. Some people own more than one sleeping bag, they may have a summer sleeping bag, a winter sleeping bag and an in-between season.

But the reality is that for most people having more than one sleeping bag is not practical for a variety of reasons. If you are unable to purchase a second sleeping bag, then workout the best way to “value add” to your existing sleeping bag, whether that is a fleece sleeping bag liner or sleeping in thermal clothes, layering clothes or a combination of all three.

A sleeping bag should be purchased with getting the most use out of it, and not buying for that one extreme time, and a sleeping bag that can be added to or taken away from is going to give you the most versatility and convenience.
